This is confusing because there are two definitions for Custom in StarCraft II. There is the overarching Custom Game type which can have a Custom category or a Melee category.
Custom Game encompasses all games which are not one of the following:
- Ladder game
- Cooperative game
- Free-for-all
- Single player campaign
You need to select Custom Game and the Melee category to earn achievements under the Custom Game achievement section. The reason for this is Melee category games always have the same conditions for victory--destroy all opponent buildings--whereas Custom category games can have any number of victory conditions, such as destroying the Nexus in Nexus Wars or defeating all waves of creeps in a Tower Defense game.

So far, everyone is raving about Archon Mode and how much it will bring to SC2.
Having played some mods that do much the same as Archon Mode, I too am really excited for it.
However..
In SC1 there was this mode called team Melee, which if I recall correctly, was the exact same thing.
My main question here is this: why are people so excited about archon mode when team Melee was kind of ignored and not really used that much? Everyone is reacting like this is a whole new idea.
Is it because there was no ladder for team Melee? Or were there too many different, unused modes in SC1 and team Melee slipped through the cracks? Is the SC scene just different now and its time has 'just arrived'?
I'm genuinely curious why this is getting so much hype when it's essentially a rebranding of an old existing idea.

Can anyone clarify this for me? I am trying to use the editor to create a map but in the past i have spent more than 300 hours on a map in the Warcraft 3 editor only to find in the end that all my work was in vain due to the map being non melee which meant that the AI was simply dumb and will just sit there doing nothing. Is this the case in the SC2 editor , is there any difference between arcade maps and melee multiplayer maps ? And if yes , what are these differences?

In the 'Arcade' - Section, you can also use campaign data, cutscenes etc.
Custom triggers are also avaible for meelee maps, althogh they aren't 'meelee' ingame.
(This just means you can't get achievements on them)

Well, basically, melee maps are the maps you would play when choosing the 'Matchmaking' from the main menu in game.
So, melee maps are just 'normal' maps where there are only normal units and normal buildings and so on. And the map's idea is always the same: defeat the other players.
Arcade maps, however, can basically be anything. In arcade maps you can, as said above, make cutscenes. You can edit all units to whatever you like. You can make new units, buildings. Anything. You also can do whatever kind of events with triggers and so on. The list is endless.
When creating a melee map on the editor, you just actually can only make the map itself look what you like, but you can't add any campaign units, for example.

Adds support for a new template 'Top vs Bottom'. This template functions like Melee, with the exception that players in each half are automatically allied and share vision at game start, thus removing the 'who am I allied with' question (and reducing the amount of clicking done after the game starts). The game creator can move players around between the two sides as needed to assign teams properly. Note that Top vs Bottom only works for games with two sides - if you want to play 2x2x2 games, you will still need to use Melee.

Adds support for Game Recording. When a game is over, there will be a new button 'Save Replay' in the victory/defeat screen. If you save a replay, you can watch it at a future date.
